POLICE and coastguards were put on alert this morning after a man threatened to jump into the sea.

Blackpool Police were called to North Promenade, St Annes, shortly after 6am after the man had threatened to take his own life.

The police helicopter was scrambled as a search was mounted and Lytham Lifeboat was also put on standby.

A Lancashire Police spokeswoman said: “We received a call to say a man had been threatening to take his own life this morning.

“He was recovered quickly and checked over by ambulance crews.

“The tide was well out so he did not enter the water. it appears this was a cry for help.”
