Police have named the man who died in a car accident in Starr Gate as Jeffrey Martin.

Mr Martin, 38 from Fleetwood, died after his black Daewoo Lanos crashed into a gate post at the beginning of the sea wall off New South Promenade just after 10.40am on Saturday.

Firefighters from South Shore fire station had to cut him from his vehicle, and he was rushed to Blackpool Victoria Hospital with “significant” injuries.

He died two hours later.

Sgt Mick Young from Blackpool’s Road Policing Unit said Mr Martin was believed to have been sat in his car parked on Squires Gate Lane for around two hours before the incident.

The air ambulance was scrambled to the scene, though he was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

A spokeswoman for the ambulance service said he had broken both of his legs, and had other serious injuries.

The road at the end of Squires Gate Lane was closed for the air ambulance to land and for police to carry out investigations.

Anyone who witnessed the accident, or saw Mr Martin in his car in the hours before hand, are urged to call police on 101.
