He had been found unresponsive shortly after 12.30am in the centre of the resort's party hotspot, which is filled with pubs, bars, takeaways, holiday flats, and apartments.

The man, in his 40s, is feared to have taken the former legal high Spice, The Gazette understands, while Lancashire Police said his death was not being treated as suspicious.

Authorities said the problem is no worse than in other major towns and cities, but it sparked calls for action to help addicts ditching heroin in favour of the drug because it is so cheap.

In a statement, the force said: "At 12.35am on Thursday, May 3, we received reports a man had been found unresponsive on Queen Street, Blackpool.

"Officers and paramedics attended but, sadly, the man, in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

"His death is not being treated as suspicious at this time, and a file will be passed to the coroner."
