A man has made his first appearance in court accused of sexual grooming over the internet.

Robert Smith is alleged to have gone to Blackburn to meet a girl prosectutors say he believed was a teenager.

Smith, 43, of Barton Square, Knott End, is alleged to have communicated with and aimed to meet a girl he believed was 14, with intent to commit a sexual offence against her on March 4.

Defence lawyer John McLaren said his client had indicated he would plead not guilty to the offence.

Smith was bailed to appear at Preston Crown Court on June 17 by Blackpool magistrates.

He must live at his given address and not have any contact, live or work with anyone aged under 18 as conditions of his bail.
