Man discovered in sea by chance after separate call to rescue 'despondent' teenager

Police searching for a "despondent" teenager near North Pier rescued another man who was discovered by chance in the sea.

Coastguard rescue teams and the RNLI were called out by police to the incident just before 11.30pm on Monday, April 16.

On arrival rescue teams were told that police searching for the teenager had found a 54 year-old man swimming out against incoming waves.

Police say they managed to recover the man and he was placed in the care of paramedics suffering with the effects of the cold.

He was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital and detained under the Mental Health Act.

Crews and lifeboats continued to search for the missing 17-year-old.

A spokesman for the Coastguard said: "Just as some of us made it into our beds last night, the pagers again alerted us to a despondent male in Blackpool following a request from Lancashire Police.

"As we met up near North Pier, we then heard that the police had seen a male enter the water and try to swim out against the incoming waves.

"The police managed to recover the man and he was being put into the care of paramedics.

"In a strange turn of events, while being paged for one person, another person was rescued.

"Coastguard Teams from Lytham and Fleetwood started a search from Norbreck to North Pier while RNLI crews from Blackpool provided assistance by searching the waters up to 30m from the promenade.

Police officers also searched various locations along the upper promenade."

A spokesman for the police said that the teenager was found several hours later safe and well at an address in Blackpool.

A 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of a public nuisance offence.
