Children aged five to 12 are keeping fit and healthy thanks to the centre’s daily holiday club, which offers young people the chance to get involved in dodgeball, squash, ten-pin bowling, table tennis, football, cricket, hockey, handball and basketball.

Alex Irvine, assistant manager of facility at YMCA Thornton, said: “We use the outdoor sports pitches - when it’s not pouring with rain - to help children develop fundamental skills such as co-ordination, balance and team-building.

“We’re getting more and more kids every day and it’s really taken off.

“Last year we tried to launch a similar holiday club but it didn’t take off very well. But this year kids must be telling their parents about it and they must be telling other parents. I’ve never seen so many people in here before.”

Marketing manager Emma Ambrose added: “The success of the holiday club has sparked plans to put on an activities club similar to Brownies or Scouts at the centre hopefully in the near future.”

The holiday club at YMCA Thornton, Victoria Road East, runs from 8.30am until 5pm every school holiday. It costs £15.50 per day for YMCA members and £17.50 for non-members. Sign up your child by calling (01253) 824108.
