FIREFIGHTERS are battling a major blaze at a student house in Blackpool this morning.

Six fire crews from across the Fylde coast were called to the mid-terrace property on Palatine Road in Blackpool at 2.50am after a fire broke out in the roof space

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service bosses said the sole occupant of the three-storey property, which is used as student accommodation, was accounted for.

A spokesman added: “The fire is contained in the roof space. The aerial ladder platform is stripping away the roof tiles to dampen down the roof void. Six breathing apparatus and three hose reels are in use.”

A bearded dragon lizard and two oriental toads had been rescued from the property by officers.

Police said neighbouring properties were evacuated at around 3.30am.

A road closure was put in place on Palatine Road between Park Road and Whitegate Drive.

A police spokesman added: “The whole house has been gutted. One male managed to get out of the building.”
