Lytham residents anger over road works during Women's Open

Royal Lytham and St Annes Golf Club was playing host to the Women’s Open, which began on Thursday and concludes on Sunday, when Lancashire County Council began re-surfacing Worsley Road.

The work began even though residents had been informed by the council that it was being postponed until Monday, when the tournament would be finished.

County Hall said it was aware The Open was being held and tried to re-schedule but this was not initially possible.

Despite eventually re-scheduling the work, residents were left angry.

One of them, Phil McCandlish, said: “This is a world class tournament being staged in a small town like Lytham, and you would think the council would be aware of that and show more respect. The noise and disruption was terrible.”

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: “We had tried to reschedule this resurfacing to avoid any disruption to The Open, however due to the contractor’s other commitments over the school summer break this has not been possible, and we have now made changes to the working arrangements to keep disruption to a minimum.

“The short section of road near the golf course entrance has now been completed so we can make sure we are away from the pedestrian entrance before spectators arrive.

“Further work is needed but is away from the course.”
