Seizing the leap year tradition which sees women across the globe getting down on one knee, Louise Forder, 31, proposed to her boyfriend Robert Green, 27, at the top of the Tower yesterday.

Louise, who works as a marketing executive, and friends wrote ‘Marry me?’ in enormous letters in the sand below to surprise her photographer boyfriend.

She said: “I said to Robert to come and take some photographs of another couple who were proposing at The Tower, then when we got upstairs I got him to the front and when he looked down at the sand I suggested he took a practice shot of me. That was when I got down on one knee.

“He was really shocked.

“We always said we would get engaged when we got our first house together and when we did Robert mentioned it was a leap year so I would have to do it. It was a bit tongue in cheek at the time but then I thought I might actually do it.

“Luckily he said yes!”

Robert said: “It was unexpected. Until she got down on one knee I didn’t have a clue what was going on.

“It was brilliant and I was very happy. It was very romantic.

“I’m going to have my work cut out for me to top this because she’s very organised about this sort of thing, but I’ll do my best.”

The couple, who live in Poulton with their dog Alfie, have been together for three years after meeting as students more than 10 years ago.

Now they are looking forward to their wedding, which they hope will take place next year.

Louise said: “We have talked about it and we’d like the wedding to be in this country so our older relatives will be able to come.

“We want something that’s just fun and we can spend all night dancing and all our social circle will be there.”

Robert added: “He haven’t got anything planned yet for the wedding but we have just bought a house and I’ll be putting a kitchen in and rewiring it, and once all that is done we’ll get on with the wedding plans.”
