Love split drove man to suicide

A MAN hanged himself on Christmas Day because he was depressed after a relationship breakdown, an inquest heard.

Brian Kevin Garner, 26, was found hanging from a loft hatch in his house in Quebec Avenue, Bispham, by his stepfather and a friend on the afternoon of December 25.

Blackpool Coroner's Court was told the former Collegiate High pupil had been depressed after splitting up with his long-term girlfriend.

The avid Manchester United fan had been to see his GP and expressed thoughts of self-harm and suicide, so had been referred to mental health services.

He had been prescribed medication for his condition.

His mother, Susan Lorraine Garner, told the inquest in a statement he came to live with her on December 16 because of his distressed state, but he went back home to Quebec Avenue to look after his cats.

His friend Scott O'Carroll stated how the two friends had been out on December 21 and Mr Gardner admitted feeling "down". They went out again on December 24 and ended up in Bar Red in central Blackpool and bars in Queens Street.

His opinion was they had a "good night", but Mr Garner walked off between midnight and 1am without saying goodbye to his pal.

When his family could not get an answer at his home the next day, they entered the house and found him.

Deputy coroner Michael Woosnam recorded a verdict Mr Garner took his own life.

He said: "I cannot imagine what impact on a family losing an integral member like this has."
