Wyre Council has agreed to fund plans to refurbish the dating gym and upgrade it with the latest digital gear, including cardio and resistance machines.

Sports and leisure boss, Coun Lynne Bowen, said: “Following major investment in Poulton and Thornton Health and Fitness Centres and with plans in the pipeline for Garstang, it is important that facilities at Fleetwood match the same high standards.

“We’ve already introduced Marine Splash water play area which brought a fantastic new element to the site in summer and plan to upgrade the learner and main swimming pools with new sand filters.

“We want to improve the experience for existing members and also attract new customers, which in turn should reduce the amount of public money needed to run the centre.”

Steve Mullins, manager of YMCA Fleetwood said: “This is fantastic news for our members and fitness customers. We introduced the new Life Fitness equipment at Poulton and Thornton earlier this year with tremendous feedback and the functional training rigs and sessions are massively popular.

“Add these improvements to the recent addition of the café and re-development of the front of the centre and we have a facility that truly offers something for everyone to benefit from.”

The new equipment will be installed before new year and further information will be sent to YMCA members in due course.

It’s a year to the day since the revamped Poulton Leisure Centre opened to the public.

As part of a major redevelopment, Wyre Council and the YMCA invested heavily in cardio and resistance equipment that personalise workouts, track results and even integrate with individual programmes away from the gym courtesy of a mobile app.

The centre now boasts 49 fitness stations, TV and internet features are also built into the kit so people can create entertainment as they train.

Work at Thornton included a new bowling alley, extreme sports facility, 3G pitches and fitness suite, which opened in the new year.
