Lego challenge event for primary school pupils

Pupils from five primary schools in Poulton converged on St John’s to make their own programmable robots in a competition organised after Pauline Chisnall from St John’s successfully applied for a £5,000 grant from the Institute of Engineering and Technology and the Institute of Mechanical Engineers to fund the Lego Mindstorms event.

With support from nearby BAE Systems, which provided Stem ambassadors to run the event, the youngsters were set various challenges.

The seven to 11 year olds had already been provided with kits to build a robot in their own schools and had had a couple of months to get to grips with learning how to programme them.

During they epic day they had to take part in a wide range of challenging projects and eventual winner was the team from Carleton St Hilda’s CE Primary.

The school taking part were Carleton St Hilda’s, St Chads, The Breck School, Carr Head and Poulton St John’s.
