She added: “To say I was shocked would be an absolute understatement.

“When I found out I had won I thought it was maybe one or two thousand, and even then I could barely sleep with anticipation.

“I actually won before, that time for £10, so I never thought a prize like this would land in my lap!

“I think the family will be heading out this weekend for a wee celebration. We were going to renovate our kitchen with the win but after discovering how much it’s for, it means we’ll be able to do the whole house.

“There are so many opportunities to win with People’s Postcode Lottery, it’s so easy to play, and we’re raising so much money for charity by playing – I’d recommend signing up to anyone!”

David Brocklehurst, 69, a retired business owner, was just as surprised.

He said: “When I signed up to play I obviously hoped I’d win one day, but for this amount is just tremendous.

“My wife and I are celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary this year so this means we’ll be able to celebrate it in style.

“Hopefully we’ll go on a cruise and then maybe even a trip to Australia.

“I joined up after I saw the adverts – it’s win win really. Players win and the charities win which is fantastic.”

The other winners from the same street were Elizabeth Ainsworth, 63, and Suzanne Brennan, 53.

People’s Postcode Lottery’s ambassador Judie McCourt, who presented the £25,000 cheques to the neighbours on their street, said: “It was absolutely great to head down to Knott End and meet the winners – and most importantly to present those cheques!

“It’s fantastic that players not only have a chance of winning every single day, but they help raise money for so many good causes.”

More than £124.1m has been raised to date by players of the charity lottery for good causes across Great Britain and internationally.
