An alleged kidnapper who is accused of setting fire to a man has made his first appearance before a magistrates’ court.

Allan Smith is said to have held a man captive in a flat at Blackpool, and sprayed his face with fuel which he then set fire to.

Smith, 39, of Lynn Grove, North Shore, is charged with false imprisonment and assault causing actual bodily harm on February 7 this year.

Martine Connah, prosecuting, asked for the case to go to the crown court.

Defence lawyer Hugh Pond said his client would not indicate pleas to the offences at that stage, and did not ask for bail.

Smith was remanded in custody to appear at Preston Crown Court on March 25 by Blackpool magistrates.
