The bridge in South Shore had been shut since last July when an inspection found steelwork had corroded prompting an emergency closure.

It had been expected to be closed until the end of March but repair work was completed seven weeks ahead of schedule.

Chris Smith, of Highfield Kitchens on Harrowside, said: “It has affected our passing trade, but we get a lot of recommendations which has kept us ticking over.

“But the work had to be done and they have worked 24/7 on it.”

Sue Miller, of Harrowside Chippy, said: “It’s absolutely brilliant it is back open and hopefully all the businesses here can now get back on track.”

Coun Fred Jackson, cabinet member for highways, said the contractor had worked additional hours to get the repairs done more quickly.

He said: “We’ve been able to do this thanks to tremendous co-operation between the contractor and the council.

“They worked extra hours to help residents and businesses in this area and to get the bridge repairs done as quickly as possible.”

Ward councillors Christian Cox and Alistair Humphreys joined residents and traders ahead of the re-opening.

Coun Humphreys said: “A close working relationship with all the shop owners has really helped but it has been stressful for them.

“There is a strong community spirit and we are going to work now to make the area even nicer.”
