Joseph and Peggy still loved up!

A D-Day veteran and a former kilt-maker are celebrating 70 happy years of marriage.

Joseph and Peggy Turpin, both 92, celebrated their platinum wedding anniversary at their Blackpool home on Friday.

The couple met as teenagers when Peggy’s parents, from Glasgow, regularly visited Joseph and his family, who lived in Blackpool.

Their son, John Turpin, 69, said: “They have brought up a strong family and they are very involved at the Holy Trinity Church in Dean Street, Blackpool.

“They have a strong relationship. They have a lot of friends at the church and they are well thought-of.

“We are all amazed that we have still got two parents at 92, nearly 93. There’s not many people my age who can say that.”

Joseph served as a radar operator in the Navy during the Second World War, and took part in the D-Day landings in June 1944.

His ship, the HMS Belfast, is one of just three surviving bombardment ships from D-Day that can still be seen today.

After the war, he worked for the Blackpool Council cleansing department.

Meanwhile, Peggy worked as a kilt-maker for the Scottish army in Glasgow.

She went on to work part-time at Blackpool airport following their marriage in 1948.

The couple have six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. John said: “I think it’s absolutely wonderful that they have managed to stay together and bring up a large extended family and still be with us after 70 years.”

He added that their secret to a long marriage was ‘consideration for each other’.
