THIS is the moment football legend Jimmy Armfield’s took his first look at the full-size statue of himself set for Bloomfield Road.
The life-size-and-a-half statue will be placed on a plinth at the south west corner of the ground, and will be unveiled on Sunday, May 1.
That date will mark 40 years to the day of the former football star’s last appearance in a Blackpool shirt.
The majority of the funding for the £75,000 statue has been raised by fans. The Football Club is paying for the foundation costs and installation, which will take place on April 28.
Mr Armfield, 75, said he felt humbled by the work of art. He added: “I had seen the model before, but when you see the real thing it’s quite a strange sensation.”
Glenn Bowley, chairman of Blackpool Supporters’ Association, said: “We are delighted with the progress being made on the statue and to get to this stage is of great credit to all those involved, especially the fans of Blackpool FC who have supported this fundraising campaign by attending the many events organised.
“The picture shows us what the statue will be like once complete but will be actually even better as it will be bronzed over. I hope people are pleased and are, like us, extremely excited about seeing the final piece unveiled.”
