Jimmy Armfield: A man of the people who gave his time willingly

Jimmy Armfield loved Blackpool and Blackpool loved him back.

Because Jimmy was a man who embraced all aspects of the community.

He was a well-known figure in the town and made time to support a whole host of local events and charities as well as Trinity Hospice.

He would turn out to open shops, launch flower festivals and would always support events involving the Armed Forces, from the Armed Forces Week to Poppy Day.

He would be the guest of honour at school awards evenings and black tie balls to support community fund-raising events.

He spent plenty of time at his beloved football club, but also offered his advice to young children who were playing the game only for fun.

His presence lent gravitas to events but he was also had that enviable charm which could put people at their ease whatever the circumstances.

The town will miss him and the time he gave to it.
