It's a very close shave for Joan!

Getting all your hair shorn may seen a bit drastic for some, but it’s all part of MacMillan’s nationwide Brave the Shave campaign.

The campaign encourages people to shave their heads and it is hoped thousands of pounds can be raised for the cancer support charity, which provides special nurses for cancer sufferers.

For Joan, 59, of Broadwater Gardens, Fleetwood, the charity is one she is all too keen to help.

She was devastated after losing her dad, John, to lung cancer when he was just 54 and her brother, Liam, to bowel cancer aged just 49.

Her Auntie Annie succumbed to mouth cancer and her Uncle Fred lost his battle with prostate cancer.

And Joan’s twin sister Janet had a terrifying brush with breast cancer, but happily survived.

Grandmother Joan, who has four daughters, underwent the very close shave at the Sunspot unisex hairdressers on Lord Street, Fleetwood, on Monday.

She went into the salon with shoulder length hair and came out with none, thanks to hairdresser Amanda Denney’s deft work with the razor. So far Joan has raised more than £1,000.

Joan said: “It will be my 60th birthday in a couple of weeks and I wanted to do something special for that too. When I looked in the mirror I looked just like my mum! I would like to thank Sunspot for all their help.”
