BLACKPOOL’S newest attraction was due to welcome its first passengers today after work to install a 33m high big wheel in the town centre was completed.
Mayor Coun Don Clapham officially launched the ride in St John’s Square, with the first members of the public set to climb aboard today.
Town centre BID (business improvement district) manager Eileen Ormand said: “After all the hard work to get the wheel here, it is wonderful to see it here and in action.
“I’m hoping it will generate footfall into St John’s Square and benefit the businesses in the town centre.”
The big wheel has been brought into the town centre by Blackpool Council and if it is a success they hope to bring it back for later in the season.
It is fitted with 24 gondolas which can each take a maximum of six passengers.
Businesses, who had asked for more events in the square, have welcomed the arrival of the wheel which is operating at no cost to the council.
