Unlucky for some, number 13 is a favourite cry of resort bingo callers.
But today, on one of the year supposedly unluckiest days of the year, a survey has revealed that Blackpool dabbers are among the most fortunate bingo players in the UK
In fact people playing the traditional game of chance in the resort are more likely to record a full house.
That’s according to a study carried out by the UK’s biggest privately-owned online bingo and casino brand.
Casino company mFortune’s created its very own ‘League of Luck’ to commemorate what the superstitious among us consider the unluckiest day of the year – Friday 13.
Analysing data from its 1.5 million players, mFortune’s list reveals Britain’s towns and cities where residents are most likely to scoop a win.
Blackpool ranks in as the country’s luckiest bingo town, with more people grabbing big cash prizes than anywhere else, possibly because Blackpool has more bingo halls than other towns and cities listed.
Enthusiasts at Mecca Bingo on Talbot Road celebrated 22 National Bingo Game wins in 2013, with the biggest winner scooping almost £25,000.
Stella Callaghan, 70, of Alpine Avenue, South Shore told The Gazette: “The club is my lucky charm and I seem to win nearly every time - not the big prizes but a little bit is better than nothing.
“People do seem to win here a lot, although I can’t put my finger on why.”
Lumena Major, 84, of Milbourne Street, Blackpool, added: “I enjoy it here - and that’s from someone who has played the casinos and Vegas and won £17,000!
“I’ve been on coach trips and played bingo in other places in England and Scotland and when I think of it I suppose I do find Blackpool a lucky venue in comparison.”
In 2004, Helen Hooper and playing partner Jean Greenhill from Blackpool completed a full house at Mecca Bingo and bagged an incredible £500,000.
In 1997, lucky bingo winner Pamela Headley scooped £105,000 at the Apollo Bingo Hall on Waterloo Road.
Mecca Bingo manager Cheryl Gifford said: “It’s clear we all enjoy the excitement of winning, and on the whole, we are a lucky nation who have all experienced a win at some point in our life. As the saying goes, you’ve got to be in it to win it!
“It’s great to see that Blackpool is within one of the luckiest parts of the country, but it seems fortune favours Brits as a whole across the nation.”
