A soldier snatched a tourist’s hat and made a drunken nuisance of himself in Kirkham town centre.

Deron Stapleton was seen staggering along Preston Street wearing the hat and clutching an empty bottle of Desperado lager.

Stapleton, a 34-year-old Corporal, of Sycamore Drive, Wesham, who is based at Weeton Army Camp, pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly.

He also admitted breaching a conditional discharge for a previous offence of being drunk and disorderly in July.

He was given a two year conditional discharge and ordered to pay a £150 court charge with £85 costs plus £15 victims’ surcharge by Blackpool magistrates.

Prosecutor, Jim Mowbray, said police received a report a man was causing problems in the Queens pub, Kirkham on September 10.

Stapleton was seen staggering up the street and when he spotted the police officer he hid in a shop. As Stapleton was being questioned a Canadian man said Stapleton had taken his hat but he did not want to make a complaint as he was on holiday.

Robert Castle, defending, said his client was suffering from post traumatic stress and was receiving professional treatment from the army.
