But it is usually from the comfort of the clubhouse, rather than on the actual pitch.

However for one day this summer, third man will be replaced by best man as Lytham Cricket Ground hosts a wedding on its outfield.

The club on Church Road is planning three days of special events in a marquee on the pitch in July – and it includes the chance for a couple to use the facility for their wedding reception.

It will be only the second time in its history the ground has been used for such an event, with the money raised going towards the club’s fundraising drive to improve its facilities.

Lytham cricketer Antony Mulligan said: “We are hoping someone’s popped the question over the festive season and they’re looking for a unique location to celebrate with family and friends.

“Many people have to wait quite a while to find the perfect place but we have one right here in the heart of Lytham.

“The ground is a beautiful location in the middle of summer and we have often been asked whether it is available for weddings.

“So this time we decided that by hiring a marquee we could offer one couple the chance to celebrate tying the knot as well as using it for other fund-raising events.”

The three-day fundraiser also includes a T20 cricket match and a testimonial event for Lancashire cricketer Steven Croft.
