WORK is well under way on the £16.4m revamp of the entrance and car park at Blackpool’s hospital.

The work will see a new multi-storey car park plus a new public entrance which will feature a pharmacy and other shops.

Construction firm Willmott Dixon has been awarded the £10.6m design and build contract and preparation work is already going ahead with demolition of outdated buildings.

The capital for the project has been borrowed from the Department of Health and will be repaid from income generated by the retail units and car park.

The new 958 space car park will mean all public and staff vehicles demand will be met on site and the scheme involves a redesign of the internal road layout and traffic light control.

The entrance will be the main point of entry for most patients and visitors except for the accident and emergency department which will use the current entry point.

Prominent from Whinney Heys Road, the new three-storey entrance aims to provide an impressive access to the hospital and will include room for a pharmacy, retail units, café, main reception, waiting area and office accommodation.

Acting hospital chief executive Tim Welch said: “The car park will be a major step forward in the provision of high quality patient care.

“We are delighted construction work has started and are pleased to be working in conjunction with Willmott Dixon, a major award-winning construction company.”

Anthony Dillon, managing director for Leeds-based Willmott Dixon, said: “We are delighted to be working with the Trust, in delivering what will be significant improvements to the facilities at Blackpool Victoria Hospital”.
