Horror for port family as car hits their house

A Fleetwood couple have spoken of their shock after a car smashed into the front of their house.

And Lee and Samantha Cooper’s toddler son Alexander, three, was lucky to escape serious injury as the impact threw their large TV forward, missing the youngster by inches.

It happened just after 8am on Friday morning when two cars collided on Addison Road.

As the two Ford Fiestas crashed, one of the cars spun, mounted the pavement and hit the house, smashing bricks out of the wall and shaking the building.

The 22-year-old female driverof the vehicle, a lime green Ford, needed minor treatment by paramedics but did not need to go to hospital, despite servere damage to the car; the driver of the silver Fiesta escaped injury.

But inside the house the occupants, who have lived in the rented property for three years, were in shock.

Alexander, known as AJ and aged three-and-a-half, was sitting on the rug just in front of the TV when the car thudded into the home.

The family are now calling for speed bumps on Addison Road, saying their have been too many accidents there.

Lee Cooper, 33, said: “It just came from nowhere. AJ was in the lounge watching the DVD, his granddad was on the sofa and we were in the kitchen when we heard a massive bang and the house shook.Next thing AJ was screaming.”

And AJ’s granddad, Gary Watt, 56, of Croft Court, Fleetwood said: “There was a bang, the TV flew forward and just missed AJ.

“One moment he was watching a Thomas the Tank Engine DVD, the next thing it all happened.

“AJ survived meningococcal septicaemia last year, so he’s had another lucky escape.”

The impact woke up the couple’s three other children, Casey, Tia and Jorja, who were off school for half term and still in bed.

Samantha Cooper, 32, said: “The house shook and woke up the kids upstairs.

“We knew there had been a car accident but we didn’t realise one of the cars had hit the house.

“When I went to the window to see what had happened, this green car was sticking out of our front wall.”

“This is not the first accident on this road, we’ve had a few just in the last few months and it is getting ridiculous.

“I have got in touch with Lancashire County Council’s highways department to ask for speed bumps down here.”

The couple are renting the house and the landlord, who was out of the country at the time, has been informed of the incident.

The cost of the damage to the house, in terms of repairs, is not yet known.

A spokesman for Lancashire Police said: “We were called around 8.10am in the morning to reports of a collision on Addison Road, Fleetwood.

“Officers attended and found a green Ford Fiesta had collided with a property.

“A second vehicle, a silver Ford Fiesta, was also involved in the incident.

“A 22-year-old woman, believed to be the driver of the green Ford, was treated for minor injuries.”

The accident was also attended by Fleetwood firefighers, whose station happens to back out onto Addison Road.

Crew manager Stephen Cheetham said: “This sort of thing is rare but we’ve been called out to a few like this.

“The female driver was treated by paramedics but later released, the male driver seemed to be unhurt.

“A building inspector from Wyre Council was called out to inspect the house to see if it was structurally safe.

“The occupants of the house were in shock. You just don’t expect something like that to happen.”

Witnesses to the incident are asked to contact police on 101 and quote the above log reference number.
