Booths has applied for planning permission from Blackpool Council to build 22 houses and 10 flats on land on Highfield Road.

The scheme also includes a convenience store, and will have an element of affordable housing.

Booths closed its Highfield Road store in August last year when it opened a new supermarket in St Annes.

A spokeswoman for the retailer said: “Following the move from our Highfield Road site to new premises at Heyhouses Lane, St Annes, and following advice from Robert Pinkus and Co, we decided through a series of detailed consultations the best use for the Highfield Road site would be residential development with a retail element.

“Booths has submitted a planning application for the development of 22 houses, 10 flats and one convenience store which we believe will benefit and serve the existing local community and which will include an element of affordable housing.

“Our plans fall in line with the council’s aim for an adequate supply of good quality affordable housing across the borough, that appeals to families and helps to create attractive, sustainable communities and support Blackpool’s ongoing regeneration.”

Stanley ward councillor Andrew Stansfield, who repesents the area, welcomed the scheme.

He said: “Any development has to be an improvement and the fact it is going to have a retail store is great for the area.

“But I would like to see the detail as to how much space each property will have.”
