Homes bid for ‘eyesore’ site

The scheme, being developed by Great Places Housing Group, will transform the former Kwik Save site in St Davids Road South, St Annes, into affordable homes.

The former supermarket was demolished eight years ago and has become overgrown, but planners at Fylde Council gave their approval for a new housing development last month.

In a further boost for the project, due to start next month, Kirkham-based architects Croft Goode have helped to design the homes.

Matthew Harrison, Great Places Housing Group’s chief executive, was delighted with the approval.

He added: “Our development on this brownfield site will provide some much-needed new, spacious and affordable properties in the area.

“We held a successful community consultation event and designed the scheme with Croft Goode to meet the high architectural quality of the area in a contemporary way.”

Fylde Council Coun Barbara Nash added: “It looks very promising. The actual plans look very, very good.

“As long as they do not change them we are happy.

“I have spoken to residents in the area and they seem very pleased with things. It will lift the area completely.”

Kensington Developments bought the site in 2007 but sold the land to Great Places Housing Group last year for an undisclosed sum.

The land has been empty since March 2006 and has become a grot spot, not helped by other businesses in the are closing down .

David Croft, Croft Goode director, said: “The designs reference the seaside location of St Annes and include features that are a contemporary interpretation of building types and detailing found along the St Davids Road frontage.”
