A popular hotel and wedding venue in Over Wyre can now be used as a huge home, the council has decided.

Springfield House in Pilling closed its doors to customers at the end of last year, and had been listed for sale for a number of years, with its owners – the Cox family – hoping it could now be sold off as a stately home.

The Grade-II listed building was built in Georgian times in around 1840, and is tucked away in around 2.5 acres of countryside surrounded by manicured lawns and a walled garden.

It was being sold in 2015 for at least £765,000, it was reported at the time, but papers lodged with Wyre Council said it had been ‘marketed for three and a half years as an ongoing concern to no avail’.

“The applicant has been forced to wind down the business and is no longer able to take bookings. The applicant seeks the change of use to attract the sale of the property.”

No building work is planned, and the estate was last listed with a guide price of £875,000.

The business said it officially closed on New Year’s Eve. “We would like to thank everyone who has enjoyed Springfield House Hotel over the past seven and a half years,” it said on Facebook.“Our last day was a sad one but now to enjoy some family time.”

The decision to close the business was made public in October, with the council agreeing to the change of use in recent days.
