The attraction is one of 17 across the North West, and among 214 nationwide, to be nominated for the Fields in Trust UK’s Best Park award.

Blackpool South MP Gordon Marsden, who is backing the bid, said: “Stanley Park is an absolute haven of interest and tranquillity at the heart of Blackpool. I have been proud in my time as its MP to back the various successful Lottery bids which have hugely aided the park’s renaissance alongside sustained input of effort and money from Blackpool Council including the recent work on the Italian Garden.

“But also the tireless work of the Friends of Stanley Park.”

Elaine Smith, chairman of the Friends of Stanley Park, added: “Whether it is the beautiful Italian gardens, our playing fields and lakes, the heritage on display in the visitors centre or the popular Art Deco Cafe, there is something for everyone at Stanley Park – I hope everyone in the town can get behind us and vote.”

People can vote for Stanley Park by visiting the Fields in Trust website at www.fieldsintrust.org/bestpark/northwest up until November 9.
