Tributes have been paid to a family man who took his wedding vows from his hospital bed.

Paul Stone married his partner of nine years, Judith Johnson, in January from his bed at Clifton Hospital after being diagnosed with terminal brain tumours.

Judith spent every moment of Paul’s last week by his side at the hospital before he died on Thursday.

Paul’s mother, Janet Dawson, said: “Paul had three wishes before he died.

“One was to get married, and we made that happen. Another was to meet Dr Who, and the nurses at Clifton Hospital arranged for a phone call with Tom Baker (the actor who played the role in the 1970s), and the third was to leave hospital to die in his own home.

“Unfortunately that was the one we weren’t able to make happen.”

Paul, 48, was left without the use of his legs after two operations on his brain and spent 18 weeks in hospital.

Janet, of Tarnway Avenue, Cleveleys, said Paul was medically fit to leave the hospital in St Annes, though there was no home available that would fit his medical bed.

Janet said Paul, of Ivy Avenue, South Shore, was a quiet man who was totally committed to his wife and family.

She said: “Paul and Judith were absolutely devoted to each other, and when the time came Judith was there for every minute.

“We knew he was going to die, but it’s still so sad. We’re just glad we could put on a wedding for him, which they had wanted for so long before Paul fell ill.

“In the end, Judith went above and beyond everyone’s expectations to be there for him – she was the main part of his life for the last nine years.

“And in the end we were all there when he died.”

Janet and her husband Ken are thanking staff on ward four of Clifton Hospital for their help in organising Paul and Judith’s wedding.

Janet added: “They made the day absolutely lovely for them. They did more for Paul and his family than we ever could have expected.”

Paul also leaves brothers David, Martin and Robert.

His funeral is today at Lytham Crematorium at 3.30pm.

TV star fulfils wish

One of Paul’s dying wishes was to meet his favourite television character Dr Who.

Inquiries by his family resulted in a phone conversation with the fourth Dr Who, Tom Baker.

Paul’s mother Janet said: “We were asking around to see if anyone could help Paul meet Dr Who, and it turned out someone knew someone who could put us in touch with Tom Baker.

“He phoned the hospital, and when he spoke to Paul, he said ‘are you the real one?’, and it was.

“The next day a package arrived for him in the post and it was a signed photograph of Tom Baker.”
