Senior managers at Blackpool Victoria Hospital have been ‘working with staff on the front line’, from matrons to the chief executive officer, a Twitter account linked to the hospital said.

“The pressures here have been high ... however the team spirit and support from our senior managers working with the frontline staff has been incredible,” @BplPatient_Exp tweeted.

The NHS has been the focus of intense media scrutiny this week, both locally and nationally, with both health secretary Jeremy Hunt and Prime Minister Theresa May apologising to patients who have had routine appointments and operations cancelled because of the winter pressures.

The Gazette revealed today how the Victoria Hospital had just 12 out of 800 beds free at the turn of 2018, with Trinity Hospice stepping in to take dying patients to free up space.

Extra beds have been opened, and more staff drafted in, while the ambulance service said it was working with staff to reduce the number of delays.
