Firefighters spent five hours dealing with a hay blaze in a Lytham barn on Saturday.

A hundred bales were alight and the incident in Watchwood Drive meant the crew missed being part of the Lytham Club Day procession – and a rather unusual look for one member of their retained ranks, who was midway through a haircut when the callout came.

“It was another one for the ‘worst time to get called out’,” a colleague posted on social media, adding: “Start of a new trend?”

Lytham Club Day officials said on the event’s Facebook site: “We are very sorry that the Lytham firefighters missed the parade – this was the first time in many years they couldn’t attend.

“Here’s to next year Lytham firefighters – we missed you and we thank you for your service to our town.”

Two fire engines from St Annes joined one from Lytham in attending the blaze.
