Margaret Hind, whose son Lance Shepherd is the Skipper of the Liverpool 2018 team yacht, and her knitting group have been putting their knitting skills to good use.

They made 14 bobble hats – matching the colour of the racing yacht – which were auctioned off to crew members for the Clipper Race’s Official Charity Partner, Unicef.

In addition to leading one of the 11 teams of non-professionals in the biggest round the world yacht race, Lance and his team have been fund-raising for the charity, with the bobble hats being the biggest hit so far.

Having raced some 8,000 nautical miles from Qingdao, China, to where the team is currently, off the coast of Mexico via Seattle, USA, the bright pink woolly hats have been clocking up some serious miles.

Lance said: “The hats are very warm and the great thing about them, which nobody thought about, is that when we are on shore in the marinas, its extremely easy to spot our fellow crew members as they stand out in hot pink!”

On whether there may be any more hats made for the remaining Legs of the Clipper 2017-18 Race, or if they will remain a limited-edition item, Lance confirmed: “They were snapped up very quickly and although it was a great fund-raiser for Unicef, I think my mum has done her bit!

“Thanks mum!”
