THE battle of the barnets is blazing on in Blackpool as the International Hairdressing championships gets under way.
Hundreds of crimpers from across the UK gathered at the new look Winter Gardens from yesterday to show off their super styled locks.
From carefully coiffed curls and crimps to bobs, bee hives, buzz cuts and a formidable collection of spiked up styles – not a hair was out of place.
The scent of hairspray filled the room and scissors snipped away as stylists battled to win a much coveted prize in the long running competition. And the standard was high according to competition organiser Dorothea English. She said: “We are thrilled to be holding another competition in Blackpool, the event has been running around 50 years now.
“It is lovely to see so many new faces competing; people come from all over the country to pick up new ideas.
“We have around 500 hairdressers in the competition and a lot have said how lovely the Winter Gardens is looking after the work.”
Categories including Creative Fantasy: Uptown Girl, Night At The Oscars and Beautiful Bride saw models strolling round with a variety of vibrant coloured hair and glitzy evening gowns.
The two-day competition is unmissable according to local stylist Joe Slinger, 23 from St Annes. He said: “I’ve been competing here for about five years, I love coming.
“You get some really good ideas from seeing what other people come up with and it’s even better if you win.”
Judge Stephen Coles also from St Annes said: “This is a great place to spot talented young stylists and the standard is always really impressive. People take competing here very seriously and a lot of hard work goes into it. There is always a nice atmosphere and people make the most of their weekend in Blackpool.”
Joanne Groom, 36 travelled from North Wales to compete with her team. She said: “We love coming to Blackpool and it’s really good experience for my stylists. We are really impressed with the make over given to The Winter Gardens, it looks so much fresher.”
