Children in need of a confidence boost have been offered a helping hand by a Blackpool gym.
ITC Gym, on Dover Court, is offering free self defence classes to youngsters who have been bullied in school.
The new six-week course aims to give school-aged kids a much-needed confidence boost.
Hazel Winter, coach at ITC, said: “People actually approached us about children being bullied.
“That’s why as coaches we decided to offer this programme for free.
“It’s open to any children that are suffering from bullying, whether online or on the school yard.
“Self defence builds confidence. We first teach them the skills to deal with confrontation and what they can do to get out of that situation. The last thing is conflict.
“If they can’t escape the situation and conflict does occur then they will know how to deal with that.”
The Brazilian ju jitsu classes run every Thursday evening at the gym for six weeks.
Hazel said: “It’s a self defence sport. Over the years it has been brought into a more competitive sport, but the techniques are all about self defence. You don’t need to have a lot of strength. It’s about using your opponents weight against them. I’m a seven stone woman and there are men that are 11 or 12 stone and I can do anything they can do.
“It’s going to give them the self confidence and self belief that if somebody is aggressive with them, they know how to deal with that situation.
“It’s giving them the knowledge that they’re not alone and they don’t have to be bullied.”
