The Cubbins fairground has been an integral part of the annual Club Day festivities for decades, but its usual base on the triangle of land at the Green’s west end is unavailable this year and next because of the ongoing works to replace sea defences.

When initial discussions between Fylde Council, which licences use of the Green, and funfair operator Stanley John Cubbins failed to identify an alternative location, fears were raised the funfair might not go ahead at the event on Saturday June 23.

But talks continued with Mr Cubbins and now the council has confirmed an agreement has been reached to site the funfair at the east end of The Green, between the windmill and Jubilee House.

Club Day committee chairman Andrea Swindlehurst (pictured)said: “This is an ideal solution while the regular site at the triangle is unavailable.

“It will be a bonus to be able to enjoy the funfair rides with a view of the windmill and I have to say all credit to the council for listening to the concerns and working with Mr Cubbins to find a solution.

A one-year licence for the new site has been agreed, allowing the setting to be reviewed for next year – but the fairground operator is delighted with the new temporary base. Stan Cubbins said: “I am delighted we could work together to negotiate an alternative location on The Green.”

Fylde Council leader Coun Sue Fazackerley said: “It keeps the fairground at the heart of Lytham.”
