Green award winners plan for year ahead

Growing fresh food for a community groups and daffodils ready to bloom - there’s a lot to look forward to for the Fylde coast winners.

Following the award win for Blundell Road Community Allotments, St Annes Town Council is hoping to gain control over more of the area’s greenery.

Coun Tony Ford said: “We think the town council has proved its worth and we’d love to have the chance to take over parks and open spaces.”

The council has plans to help with St Annes in Bloom, hoping this year’s displays can be grown in the area instead of brought in.

Community groups help out with the upkeep of the plots including the Omerod Home Trust, St Anne’s Church and the youth council.

Coun Ford added: “We also plan to get involved with the Fylde Food Corporation.

“We want to designate some plots so we can provide food to those who need it such as shelter groups.

“This project is very much rooted in the community.”

The awards, backed by principal sponsor Remsol and run by The Gazette and the Lancashire Evening Post, recognise achievements from businesses and organisations Lancashire.

Last year’s, the fifth annual awards, were held at The De Vere Village Hotel, Blackpool, in November.

Fellow prize winners, the Friends of Highfield Road Park, are in the process of planning displays for spring.

The team planted hundreds of daffodil bulbs with children from Bluebell Lodge Nursery, on St Annes Road, in November.

Organiser Karen Pennington said: “Winning the award was really the highlight of last year for us. We still have to pinch ourselves to realise we did achieve the Green Community Award, which we think was due to the involvement of the general community. The public have been very supportive, complimenting and asking about our work.

“We are going to have a celebration afternoon so people can actually see it.”
