Gravy grappling PCSO is a hit in the ring

The World Gravy Wresting Championships is anything but a typical English culinary affair.

In fact it involves one pub, 20 contestants and 1,500 litres of meaty sticky gravy all in the name of charity.

And this year one of the brave contestants was Fylde Police Community Support Officer Trevor Sterling.

Taking to the ring at the Rose n Bowl pub, in Stacksteads, Rossendale, PCSO Sterling, who works in the Kirkham neighbourhood police team pulled out all his favourite wrestling moves in a bid to defeat his opponents.

A Fylde police spokesman said: “PCSO Trevor Sterling grappled it out in 400 litres of gravy to raise money for the East Lancashire Hospice.

“Well done Trevor.”

The annual event now in its eighth year is held in aid of the East Lancashire Hospice and attracts contestants and spectators from across the country.

The latest event on Bank Holiday Monday raised more than £3,000 for the Blackburn-based hospice.

Denise Gee, event organiser for the hospice, said: “This all started off as a bit of fun eight years ago. It’s now really well supported.”
