Three children have been taken to hospital following the incident on the motorway, close to Kirkham, which occurred at around 6pm on Sunday.

Police said the one youngster was lucky to be alive after the force of the collision, when a 4x4 lost control and rolled over, sent her through the car’s window.

Lancashire Police force incident manager Insp Grant Smith said: “The children are very lucky they are going to live to tell another day.

“One of the children had been thrown from the vehicle. Luckily she was probably the least injured of the three of them.”

The children were travelling with their parents, who escaped with cuts and bruises

The motorway was closed for around three hours to allow the air ambulance to land on the carriageway.
