Detectives stressed their inquiry was at an early stage and no arrests had been made.

The girl is now being supported by specially-trained officers, a spokesman said.

The information was revealed by Blackpool Police on its Twitter feed on Tuesday morning as part of Lancashire Police’s #policedemand initiative to show the public the type of calls it receives and demands on the force.

The incident was later confirmed by detectives.

A spokesman for Lancashire Police said: “We are investigating after a 16 year old girl reported to police that she had been sexually assaulted at an address in the central area of Blackpool overnight on Monday.

“We remain in the very early stages of our enquiries and the victim is being supported by specially trained officers. No-one has been arrested at this stage.”
