WORK is due to start to install a giant illuminated heart on Blackpool Tower.

The feature is being paid for out of the £2m annual Illuminations budget but will be a year-round attraction.

As well as being designed to reflect VisitBlackpool’s ‘I Love Blackpool’ campaign, the heart will fittingly overlook the resort’s new wedding chapel.

The Prom will be closed to traffic on Monday between Chapel Street and Talbot Square for up to eight hours while the heart is hauled into place, but the work will be carried out overnight in order to minimise disruption.

It is the latest phase of redevelopment on this part of the Promenade which will see the Comedy Carpet officially unveiled on October 10.

The wedding chapel is due to open early next year and bookings for ceremonies in 2012 are now being taken.

Coun Graham Cain, cabinet member for tourism and culture on Blackpool Council, said: “This will add an extra wow factor.

“The heart will be a permanent feature opposite the wedding venue on the Tower Festival Headland and I’m sure will be a very popular new addition.

“It will be installed during the night to minimise disruption.”

The heart, which will overlook the Prom, will be fitted between 128 and 165 feet up the Grade I landmark.

It will be made up of hundreds of LED lights which can be programmed to create multiple patterns, colours and shimmering effects.

Arrangements will also be able to be made to link the heart to specific wedding activities at the chapel.

Once in place next week, it is expected to take a couple of days to put the finishing touches to it before it is switched on as part of this year’s Illuminations.

If bad weather prevents the installation on Monday, it will be delayed until later in the week or the following week.
