Their lesson plans may sometimes sound like they are training to be the next James Bond or Jason Bourne.

In actual fact, Norland College in Bath, has been producing elite nannies for some of the world’s most famous royals, aristocrats and celebrities since 1892.

In addition to everyday practical skills such as sewing, first aid and fitting car seats, the nannies’ three-year degree programme also includes lessons in self-defence, evasive driving and how to deal with potential kidnappers.

And Blackpool and the Fylde College level three early years student Georgia Taylor is about to pack her bags and head south to undertake the rigorous training needed to become a 21st Century Mary Poppins – complete with the traditional uniform of brown felt hat and white gloves.

The 18-year-old, of Fleetwood, said: “I’m really pleased to have been accepted.

“I think around 1,000 people apply each year and only about 80 are taken on.

“I have tried to ensure I have well-rounded experience and have worked in a school and two different nurseries during my time at college.

“I know people who have been accepted who have just done generic A-levels and I hope I have a more specific knowledge of the skills required due to my education at B&FC which will give me a good starting point.”

The news comes after Charles Lanzani, from Lytham, last year became the Ofsted Outstanding college’s first student to be accepted at the prestigious school, where graduates include Prince George’s nanny Maria Borrallo. As one of the new recruits, Georgia will be among the first to study in Norland’s new £2.3m teaching centre.

Deborah Audin, B&FC tutor, said: “I am extremely proud of what Georgia has achieved due to her commitment and hard work.

“Norland nannies are renowned for being the best out there and what Georgia has learnt at B&FC will stand her in good stead for her continuing education and a successful career.”
