By George! We’ve got ’em

Whether it be the future King, an actor with the surname Clooney or a former entertainer called Formby, the name George remains more popular than ever before – and now it could help to set a world record.

Event organisers at this year’s St George’s Day Charity Festival in Lytham are calling on hundreds of Georges to visit the town in April in a bid to set a world first.

Ten years ago, a crowd of ‘Mohammeds’ took to a Mall in Dubai to claim the record for the most people with the same name gathering in one place.

Now organisers of the festival – established in honour of the patron saint of England – want 1,097 Georges to go to the parade on April 25 and set a new world record – with television presenter George Clarke among those taking part.

The host of Channel 4’s Restoration Man said: “I think this is a really exciting Guinness World Record attempt that I just had to be a part of.

“My grandfather and father were both called George, they obviously named me George and I then named my first son George ,too. What’s even more amazing is that he was born on St George’s Day.

“And, with our most recent Prince being named George, it has to be the best name in England.”

The festival, which takes place between April 23 to 26, includes a charity golf tournament, comedy night, gala dinner and family fun run as well as many other events.

It has raised more than £85,000 for charity in the last seven years.

Bob Gallagher, festival chairman, said: “To have somebody with the profile and following of George Clarke on board is a huge boost and we hope it will encourage more people with the name George to get involved. There’s so much to see and do on the day of the parade, which will be a real celebration of all things English, and we are certain that all Georges who attend will have an amazing time as well as help to raise money for charity and create a piece of history.”

To any Georges wanting to enter the world record attempt you will need to bring a copy of your birth certificate.

Entrants are also encouraged to dress as your favourite George – whether it be Best, Formby, Harrison, Clooney or Foreman.

Georges who register to 
attend the parade will also be entered into a prize draw to win a Mini car.
