French group's visit packed with '˜entente cordiale'

A second continental twinning link for Lytham and St Annes moved a major step forward with a visit by a delegation from the French town of Caudry.

The group led by Caudry mayor Frederic Bricout joined in St Annes Carnival procession, tasted traditional food and the Lytham Brewery even brewed up a special beer for the occasion, Caudry Blonde.

Along with tour of Lytham Hall and Windmill, the three-day visit also included an information exchange at Fylde Rugby Club, which saw the French meet local sporting, cultural, leisure and education groups with the aim of establishing future exchange visits involving young people.

An invitation has been extended for a local team to take part in a tournament in Caudry next Easter, while the French delegation were so impressed with town crier Colin Ballard that he has been invited to Caudry’s next Carnival in 2020. In the meantime, members of Lytham St Annes Twinning Association hope to attend a commemoration in Caudry in October to mark 100 years since the town was liberated by British troops.

Coun Tony Ford, chairman of Lytham St Annes Twinning Association, said: “It was a really successful weekend. We had a great time together.

“I am sure that following this visit many opportunities will arise for organisations from both Caudry and Lytham St Annes to work on co-operative activities and projects with a view to establishing a twinning link.”

Lytham and St Annes have been twinned with the German town of Werne since 1984.
