The microchips, which contain a unique code which helps owners locate their pets if they are lost or stolen, are inserted painlessly under the animal’s skin and can be updated by owners at any time.

As of April 2016, it will be a legal requirement for pet owners tohave their dogs microchipped in England and Wales.
