Lancashire police are investigating allegations that ex-Blackpool footballer Ian Evatt was attacked by Preston North End fans during a pitch invasion.

North End sealed a place in the League One play-off final after beating Chesterfield 4-0 on aggregate at Deepdale.

After referee Andy D’urso blew the full-time whistle thousands of North End fans ran onto the pitch.

But the celebrations were marred by an alleged attack on Chesterfield defender and ex-Tangerine Ian Evatt.

Police confirmed they have interviewed Evatt about the incident.

Evatt tweeted: “To be attacked on a football pitch and fear for your safety is an absolute disgrace. I was punched kicked and spat on several times.”

A Lancashire Police spokesman said: “We are investigating an assault on a Chesterfield player which followed a largely peaceful incursion onto the pitch at the end of the match.

“While the player was thankfully not seriously hurt police are investigating the assault in a bid to identify the offender, including reviewing CCTV footage.”
