A flooding warning was issued tonight for the River Ribble in Lancashire as high winds and heavy rain battered the county.

The Environment Agency said a flood alert was in force due to heavy rain for the River Ribble from Samlesbury and the River Darwen from Darwen including Blackburn, Preston, Walton-Le-Dale, Pleasington and Higher Walton. Heavy rain is expected to continue through the night.

Meanwhile, Coronation Street in Blackpool was closed tonight as high winds caused havoc across the resort as Storm Stella struck.

Heavy gusts were whistling across the town, loosening slates and making structures unstable.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service’s Phil Jones, Community Protection Manager for Blackpool and Fylde Districts, posted this picture on Twitter of the service at the scene on an incident.

He said: “Wind playing havoc on Coronation Street, Blackpool. Road temp closed whilst slates made safe.”

A Lancashire police spokesman said the force was alerted at around 5.55pm.

There were structural issues with a building in Coronation Street and the road was likely to remain closed overnight
