A flood warning has been issued as high tides and strong winds look set to cause problems right along the Fylde coast.

The Environment Agency issued the warning this afternoon as it advised people to stay away from the shore.

The latest piece of advice follows the Met Office’s decision to issue an amber alert, that will come into force just after midnight, with winds reaching speeds of 70mph expected to hit on Friday.

The risk of flooding will be worst at high tide, although large waves are predicted to spill over the top of the sea defences as the wind picks up.

Large sections of the country have been put on alert, with the highest category of warning issued to some coastal communities in the South.

Craig Woolhouse, the Environment Agency’s head of flood incident management, said: “Strong winds and large waves along the west and south coasts of England are forecast between Friday and Sunday, coinciding with high tides.

“Impacts could include flooding affecting some coastal properties and communities. Coastal paths and promenades could be highly dangerous as there is an increased risk of being swept out to sea. People are warned to stay away from the shoreline.

“The Environment Agency is monitoring the situation closely, working alongside partners including the Met Office and local authorities. Environment Agency teams are out on the ground making sure that flood defences are in good working order, monitoring sea levels and preparing to issue flood alerts and warnings.”

High tide in Blackpool will be at 11.45pm tonight and 12.05pm on Friday.

The flood warning is likely to remain in place over the weekend, with the Met Office issuing another wind warning for Sunday.
