Scrap metal merchants Foulds Metals, on Siding Road, Fleetwood, set up a special skip last summer which has allowed its customers and members of the public the chance to deposit small pieces of scrap metal there. When the skip gets full and the items are weighed and sold, money raised goes towards the Lifeboat.

This week the first cheque for £564 was handed over and the skip is now a permanent on-going fixture.

And it is hoped the scheme can be rolled out all over the country, with other scrap metal firms helping their local Lifeboats in a similar
way.

Capt Dave Eccles, the operations manager for Fleetwood Lifeboat, said: “It’s a win-win scheme, helping the Lifeboat but also giving people somewhere to deposit awkward, small pieces of scrap metal. We would love to see this scheme rolled out across the country.”

Foulds manager Liam Barnes said: “It’s proved a big success and this scheme is ongoing. People don’t have to get rid of these items at the tip, they can come here and it will help the Lifeboat.”

This summer will see the Tyne Class lifeboat in Fleetwood replaced by a new
Shannon Class all weather lifeboat at a cost of over £2m. The new vessel is due to arrive in Fleetwood in June, with a lot of public interest expected.

Captain Eccles added: “The hard work starts here for the volunteer shore and Lifeboat crew.

“There’ll be a lot of training to be completed before the new lifeboat is commissioned. But these are also exciting times for RNLI Fleetwood team and their supporters.”
