Firefighters battle blaze in Newton

A series of 999 calls were made by members of the public who reported "flames shooting" through the roof of the cabin on Thames Street.

Firefighters were sent to the scene just before 11pm on Wednesday, and arrived to find three separate fires located in a log cabin, barn and a garage.

Station Manager Pete Ashby said: "We were called out to reports of a log cabin on fire but when we arrived we actually found there were three fires located in adjacent buildings.

"Two fire engines initially attended and they requested further engines to be sent.

"Wesham, Penwortham, Preston, South Shore and Bispham all attended throughout the course of the incident along with the Aerial Ladder Platform from Blackpool.

"There was an additional risk of gas cylinders in the barn, these were cooled.

"Four firefighters wore breathing apparatus and used two main jets and two ventilation units to bring the fire under control.

"We reduced the fire engines to one just before 4am.

"The crews did absolutely superbly. The conditions they were faced with were very difficult - they ensured that the water supply was maintained and did very well to tackle what was a difficult fire to put out in the roof space."

Fire services say the cause of the fire is not yet known although a joint police and fire service investigation is currently underway.

Nobody was injured in the incident.

This is the second blaze to have affected Newton this week, although firefighters say the two fires are completely unrelated.
